Badgemore Year 6 Pupils Gain Lifesaving Skills at Junior Citizen Event
Year 6 pupils from Badgemore Primary School took part in an inspiring and educational visit this week as they attended the Junior Citizen programme in Oxfordshire—an initiative designed to equip young people with essential lifesaving skills and practical knowledge to help them stay safe.
Hosted by the Junior Citizens Trust, the event brings together a range of interactive workshops aimed at preparing children for real-life emergencies. The trust offers free safety education to all Year 6 pupils across the county. Through hands-on scenarios, children learn how to recognise risks, respond to dangerous situations, and even practise making a 999 emergency call.
The activities take place at the Oxfordshire Fire & Rescue Service Franklin-Vermeulen Safety Centre, where specially adapted rooms simulate real-world environments. Pupils move through a series of scenarios led by professionals from partner organisations including Thames Valley Police, St John Ambulance, The British Red Cross, Trading Standards, and Chiltern Railways.
The Junior Citizens Trust emphasises that these workshops are more than just educational—they provide vital skills that could one day save lives. By exposing children to realistic situations in a safe and supportive environment, the programme helps build confidence, awareness, and resilience.
As our year 6 pupils returned to school, they brought with them not only new knowledge but a stronger sense of responsibility and community awareness. The visit marks an important milestone in their preparation for secondary school and the increasing independence that comes with it.
Badgemore’s Year 6 class left the event with a clear message: safety is everyone’s responsibility, and knowing what to do in an emergency can make all the difference.
