Badgemore joined local primary schools to step back in time at Henley Town Hall to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day. The immersive educational event was led by Doing Their Bit — a group dedicated to teaching children and adults about life on the home front during World War Two.
Throughout the day, children were given a real sense of what it was like to grow up during wartime. They saw and handled original artefacts including a typewriter, wartime clothing, and a butterfly bomb, which was specifically designed to target children.
Mock air raids were staged using a siren, prompting children to scramble under their chairs as pupils of the 1940s would have done. For lunch, they ate fish and chips served in cardboard boxes to mirror the ration-conscious meals of the era.
